wired versus wireless

Watch the demonstration of a basic router set up a here.
To share your broadband internet connection across all your home computers is the topic of the video and the point is to market Network Magic software. The video presentation seems pretty basic and barring any missing steps, simple to follow and to complete. I have never set up a router. But, I do have a FiOS cable modem which also serves as my router for wireless connection. Of course it is password protected (not the default p/w), and I have Norton security software on my p.c. I recall the technician needing to setup/configure the connection before it would connect. I didn’t notice that configuration was mentioned in the video.

Wireless without security is pretty careless. The first step is to change the default admin password to a unique password you can remember and then assign your network a different name (SSID). This is important to keep your personal information safe and “accidental” users (a neighbor) from accessing your network. Wireless is cheaper than wiring your entire house or office. Wireless is also complete with “blind spots” where you will not be able to connect or you will experience poor connection. This will also occur with more users connected to the wireless connection; it will be slower.

A wired connection connects directly to your router. This is faster and more secure. No one could drive by and connect to your network. Every p.c. connected will run faster with fewer errors. Also, wired restricts the user to the restraints of a physical connection, or length of the wire. If you’re able to choose your connection, wired is the best and most secure method of connecting to the network.

I’m not certain, even after searching, what I could advise for an alternative setup to the method shown in the video. Also, I am curious if someone who needs to set up their connection would have access to this video. :-/
